Study of Chinese Learners' Pedagogical Choices in Korean

The discourse completion test (DCT) is widely used in the field of pragmatic research. It has many strengths, but it also has a few disadvantages. For instance the DCT cannot account for cultural and personal variations in communication. The DCT can also be biased and result in overgeneralizations. This is why it must be carefully analyzed before using it for research or for assessment purposes.

Despite its limitations the DCT is a valuable tool for analyzing the relationship between prosody, information structure and non-native speakers. The ability to manipulate social variables that affect the manner of speaking in two or more steps could be a plus. This characteristic can be utilized to study the impact of prosody in different cultural contexts.

In the field of linguistics the DCT has become one of the primary instruments for analyzing learners' behaviors in communication. It can be used to examine various aspects that include the manner of speaking, turn taking and lexical choices. It can be used to evaluate phonological complexity in learners in their speech.

A recent study used a DCT to evaluate EFL students' refusal skills. Participants were presented with a variety of scenarios to choose from and were then asked to select the most appropriate response. This study examined Chinese learners their pragmatic choices when they use Korean. The RIs were recorded and transcribed by two coders independent of each other who then coded them. The code was re-coded repeatedly by the coders, re-reading and discussing each transcript. The results of the coding process are compared with the original RI transcripts to determine if they reflected the actual behavior.

Interviews with Refusal

The most important question in pragmatic research is: Why do some learners choose not to accept native-speaker norms? The interviewees expressed concern about the social pressures or penalties they could face in the event that their local social norms were violated. These results suggest that native-speaker practical norms are no longer the default preference of Korean learners. They may still be useful for official Korean proficiency testing. But it would be prudent for future researchers to reassess their usefulness in particular situations and in different cultural contexts. This will allow them to better understand the effects of different cultural environments on the pragmatic behavior and classroom interactions of students in L2.
